Please join KMR Arts for an opening reception and book signing for Brandon Ralph: The American Vernacular on Saturday, Jun 13, from 3 - 5:30 pm. Brandon Ralph is an American contemporary artist who uses satire and surrealism to explore the ideals, symbolism and complexities of life. Often using photography, collage and sculpture in his work inviting the viewer to reevaluate common themes in their everyday existence.
Raised by a single parent in a middle-class neighborhood on Long Island, NY, Brandon Ralph’s perspective was shaped by the juxtaposition of his mother’s unwavering belief in the American Dream and the harsh reality of growing up on welfare along with learning disabilities. Held back in grade school and placed in special education classes throughout the rest of his tenure, Ralph grappled with academic learning and exploring his early identity in a system that often felt inaccessible and unforgiving. Coupled with the loss of both parents within six months beginning at age eighteen, Ralph’s lack of financial resources forced him to drop out of New York University. It was during this pivotal moment that Ralph’s past and present converged, revealing to him that America, while not always fair, remains a place of opportunity and possibility. Driven by the relentless American hustle, Ralph co-founded Code and Theory in 2001, which has since become one of the largest and most awarded creative and technology agencies in the world. Ralph’s years of experience in storytelling, design, and technology informs his bold, graphic, and innovative work that blends emotion with modern expression.
In The American Vernacular, Ralph juxtaposes images dominated by text, both unexpected and commonplace, often captured miles and years apart. These works further emphasize how semiotics differ by social, cultural, or historical contexts across the United States, yet as Ralph combines found words photographed in urban, suburban, and rural landscapes, they form a singular image where seemingly disparate people, and the American past and present, meet in seminal harmony. By resynthesizing text unbeholden to original meaning, Ralph seeks to form a new set of narrative possibilities, a new language, reshuffling the deck of our past to offer a new story. Humorous at first glance, The American Vernacular asks the viewer to linger, to note that Ralph accentuates his perspective with deepening irony, commenting on the infinite ways the written word has played a role in shaping societal and cultural perspective in today’s culture. As in his previous works in the series, Ralph’s art continues to evoke nostalgia while addressing contemporary themes.
